Easing the burden of homelessness, one backpack at a time.
Our goal is to ease the burden of homelessness by assembling backpacks filled with food, clothes, and toiletries and distributing them to the homeless in Athens and Atlanta, GA. We believe that every homeless person deserves a better quality of life, no matter their circumstances. We go beyond simply providing supplies; we establish personal connections with the people we meet by hand-delivering every backpack we make. Fulfilling the physical and emotional needs of the homeless is part of our broader philosophy of being the change we want to see in the world, starting in our local communities.
The Backpack Project proudly serves the homeless in the cities of Athens and Atlanta. Estimates state that there are nearly one thousand homeless people in the City of Athens and more than six thousand in Atlanta. We believe that the homeless in our communities are among those most in need of our attention, innovation, and philanthropy.
The Backpack Project was founded on April 4, 2015 by Zack Leitz. His intention was to help the homeless in his local community of Athens by providing them with backpacks filled with food, clothes, and toiletries. Both the idea and the organization have since grown, and today The Backpack Project has a staff of ten as well as a highly talented Board of Advisors. To date, The Backpack Project has hand-delivered more than 700 backpacks to the homeless, representing thousands of dollars’ worth of essential supplies provided directly to the homeless in Athens and Atlanta. Looking forward, we eagerly anticipate expanding our operations in Atlanta and increasing our reach to provide more people with backpacks.
